JUUL Frequently Asked Questions

What is JUULing?

JUUL is a brand name of an e-cigarette.   When one uses a JUUL to vape, it’s commonly called JUULing.  A JUUL looks like a computer’s USB drive.  It’s filled with nicotine.   When heated, an aerosol is created and that’s what is vaped.  The JUUL brand became very popular with teenagers because the “pods” of nicotine were flavored with sweet tastes like mango, fruit and candy.

Is JUULing different than vaping?

JUULing and vaping are the same.  JUULing is essentially a name-brand of vaping.  JUUL products dominate the e-cigarette marketplace.  Because JUUL products are sleek and designed to look like a USB drive, teenagers can easily hide them from parents and teachers.  In fact, teenagers can tell stories of vaping occurring in the classroom without the teachers knowing.

Is JUULing bad?

Yes.  On August 30, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urged everyone to stop vaping and juuling.  More than 1,200 people have been diagnosed with severe lung issues due to vaping and 29 people have died.    The aerosol from vaping contains a variety of small particulars of many cancer-causing substances.

What is EVALI?

EVALI stands for e-cigarette or vaping product used associated with lung injury.   It’s the  name health officials have come up with for the lung illnesses associated with vaping.  Health officials say they still don’t know the exact cause of the illness.   Some patients are having recurring hospitalizations and will have permanent degenerative lung disease.

Is JUULing addictive?

Highly.  One JUUL pod has more nicotine than entire pack of cigarettes.  Some teens report juuling 2-3 pods a day.   Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and the Surgeon General warns any use of nicotine by youth in any form is unsafe.

What are symptoms of vaping illness?

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, chest pain while breathing, coughing up blood, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and more.  Many of the symptoms are similar to the flu or pneumonia.   These common symptoms were based on 53 patients in the Midwest and the study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

What is popcorn lung from vaping?

Popcorn lung is a lung illness that causes airway scarring due to inflammation.  The inflammation makes it difficult to breath.  Popcorn lung gets its name from a chemical that was used to flavor food products like butter.  Popcorn factory workers exposed to diacetyl were the first to be diagnosed with disease.  Once this condition was discovered, the chemical was removed by the popcorn producers. According to the American Lung Association, vaping or juuling can cause popcorn lung because the aerosol or vape often times contains diacetyl.
